Earning SWE points is easy! Just attend any of our meetings and volunteer for activities or events. Here is a list of how many points you can earn for participating in SWE activities:

On-Campus Event: 2 base points + 1 point per hour

Off-Campus Event in Columbia: 3 base points + 1 point per hour

Off-Campus Event outside of Columbia: 5 base points + 1 point per hour

Extras: 2 points for early sign-ups, 2 points for van drivers

Three members (not including officers) with the most points at the end of spring semester will receive prizes. Scholarships are awarded in the spring to the three members who earn the most points during the year. You must be a national member in order to earn one of these scholarships!

The scholarship amounts are:

Most points - $1000

2nd most points - $750

3rd most points - $500

Note: This points update does not necessarily reflect the winners of the points scholarships. For the scholarship, all points (up to the April meeting) will be considered.

The scholarship application is also due on Wednesday - remember, you must be a national member to apply. This scholarship is separate from the points scholarship (which does not require an application).

Can-struction 2011 was a huge success! This year's theme was "Extinction of Hunger", and we chose to build a dodo bird. A big thank you goes out to the Mid-Missouri professional section, and to everyone who helped build the bird. We even won an award for "Best Use of Labels"! Mizzou SWE Update:

We have been very busy the last few weeks, and in case you missed out here is a brief update.

Last weekend, February 26-27 our chapter held the Region I Conference for over 150 students, professionals, and speakers. The conference was a great success as well as fun and informative. Thank you to all the sponsors, volunteers, the conference planning committee and of course, Rachael Fischer for making everything possible!

Also February 20th was Girl Scout Day. About 100 girl scouts form all over Columbia as well as St. Louis attended and learned a lot about engineering. Thanks to all that volunteered, as well as Girl Scouts of America, the Girl Scout Day planning committee, and Girl Scout Day Chair Stacy Thompson for making it a great success!

SWE Mentor Program
Freshmen are paired with an older SWE member, usually within their discipline. The mentor program seeks to help the freshmen acclimate to Mizzou and engineering, and conducts a team-building activity each month. Activities this year have included pumpkin carving, trivia, and Venture Out. For more information, contact Megan Schmidt (mmsny9@mail.mizzou.edu) or Erin Carter (elcty8@mail.missouri.edu).

Middle School Engineering Project
Once a month SWE sends several members to middle schools outside of Columbia to talk with students about engineering and do a fun project. The projects are generally on Tuesdays and Thursdays, in Boonville and Harrisburg (each is about 30 to 35 minutes away). SWE Green Tea
One of the most important events in the College of Engineering is E-Week, which takes place the week of St. Patrick's Day. Various Mizzou engineering organizations are involved in the many events and activities of E-Week. One of SWE's contributions is the annual Green Tea. All MU students, staff and alumni are invited to a gathering with refreshments and a professional speaker. The Green Tea is a great opportunity to mingle with other female engineering students. Dress is business/business casual. For more information contact Morgan Elliott (mae2p3@mail.missouri.edu) or Suzy Shands (ssy83@mail.mizzou.edu).

The 2012 SWE Green Tea will occur on St. Patrick's Day (Saturday) March 17.

Girl Scout Day
Each year, usually in February, SWE invites Girl Scout troops to learn about engineering at Mizzou. The girls participate in fun projects geared toward different engineering disciplines. It's a great opportunity to show girls that engineering is a lot of fun! SWE was founded in 1950 and since has offered aspiring women engineers many opportunities such as scholarships, outreach development, networking and vocational assistance.

To be an officer of SWE or to attend conferences you must be a national member. A collegiate one year membership is $20 and a 4 year Collegiate to Professional membership is a one time fee of $50, a great deal! For more info on this amazing organization, visit the official SWE National website:

National Conference & Regional Conference Too!

National Conference was way back in October, or maybe even November, but it was
really awesome. Thousands of girls, and a few brave young men met up in Baltimore
to celebrate SWE in all its glory, learn things from workshops, and try to get a sweet
job/internship with one of the hundreds of companies at the career fair. Our fair chapter
sent I believe twelve representatives including nearly the entire collection of officers.
Besides a small hotel snafu, the entire event was a grand success and the unseasonably mild
weather lead to a great weekend for everyone in Baltimore.

And Regional Conference was much more recent, as in being February 6-8 if I recall correctly.
This was yet another demonstration of how awesome our section is, because we dominated all voting sessions, including a bid for us to hold the Regional Conference next year. And we got two
officers elected to regional positions. Those lucky ladies are Rachel Fischer and Katie Kielholz.
Rock on girls, rep that mizzou pride. Go us.

Can-struction

Ok, so I missed out on this fabulous event, but I have it on good word,
that it really rocked. All the cans went to Missouri Food Bank, and the
building competition was really cool and awesome to see what people could
"Canstruct."

September Career Fair
Last year over 100 companies came to recruit Mizzou students. We organize this event and make sure students sign in and get any information they need for a successful job search. SWE volunteers also help the companies set up their booths in the morning, make sure they have plenty of refreshments during the day, and help them pack and move things in the afternoon. Middle School Engineering Project
This is a fun outreach project that aims to encourage 5th and 6th graders to pursue careers in engineering. We have a Powerpoint presentation that introduces the students to different engineering disciplines. Then we do simple engineering-related projects with the class to show them how fun science can be. Some past projects have been; spaghetti and marshmallow bridges, a roller coaster made of paper and straws, making silly putty, and balloon towers. We visit classrooms in Boonville and Harrisburg several times each year. If you'd like to participate in any of the activities, just email the Middle School Project Chair.

Holiday Dinner
Each year we have a dinner with the professional SWE chapter. You can network with the professionals while enjoying a delicious meal. Members with the most SWE Points will also be recognized at this meeting. Dress is business-casual. Cost is $5.

Girl Scout Day
One of SWE's goals is to promote diversity by getting more women interested in engineering. That's why we introduce Girl Scouts to engineering through simple projects that let them experience the different disciplines. The girls always have a lot of fun participating, and the volunteers have a lot of fun helping them earn their specially designed engineering badge. Want more information? CANstruction
This is an activity we do with the professional SWE chapter every year (usually in February). Canned food is used to build a cool design for promoting donations to the Central Missouri Food Bank. If you have a good design idea or just like stacking cans of food, get involved!

Corn Maze Extravaganza

Well the crazy folks in Mizzou SWE were at it again in early October, taking off
for another social outing like no other. This time SWE partnered up with SHPE (Society of
Hispanic Professional Engineers) and NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) to have
a party. The three entourages met up at Laffere Hall then took off for the corn maze just a few
minutes down I-70. From SWE, such fantastic folk were in attendance as Alexis, Hannah,
Alexis's cousin (oops, forgot her name), and
Michelle. (pictured at right)

But that wasn't all, oh no, several of the SWE guys came along too to spice things
up even more. The group was split the duration of the corn maze, with only Brian Swift
making guest appearances in each separate group by "creeping" up on them in the
dark maze. Despite the spooks and scares a good time was had by all.

Sunday Bowling Shindig 08

Mizzou SWE threw its first ever 'Sunday Bowling Shindig' on September 7, 2008.
The event was quite a success with around 25 members in attendance.
Popcorn and drinks were enjoyed by many while laughs and bowling was
enjoyed by all.
